URGENT NEED TO ABOLISH MODERN SLAVERY

Modern slavery refers to the exploitation of individuals through forced labour, debt bandage, human trafficking and other forms of coercion. Despite being prohibited by International law, modern slavery, persists in many parts of the world.

Anti-Slavery International define modern slavery as,"when an individual is exploited by others, for personal or commercial gain...whether tricked, coerced, or forced, they lose their freedom...and also involve human trafficking, forced labour and dent bandage."

According to the International Labour Organisation,  50 million men, women and children in all countries are affected by forced labour. Therefore, ILO has mandated to promote Fundamental Principles and Right at Work, globally, leaving no one behind.

The United Nations agency published its report early this year: Profits and Poverty: The economics of  forced labour. The report revealed that illegal proft from forced labour rose by 37 per cent, over the past decade, to $236bn per year, with sexual exploitation accounting for nearly three-quarters of the total.

The rise in ill-gotten wealth is due to growth in the number of people forced into labour, as well as an increase in the profit generated fron the exploitation of each victim, the report revealed.

Latest estimates showed that forced labour and forced marriages have increased significantly, in the last five years. Studies show that modern slavery occurs in almost every country in the world.

ILO report says migrant workers are victims of forced labour and trafficking. Experts stress the need for effective national policies and regulations to reverse the trend. Global agreements, such as the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs) aim to eradicate modern slavery.

Global Slavery Index highlight forced labour in fisheries, farming and garment sectors. Index further reveal multiple ways the financial sector is exposed to the risks of modern slavery, through its operations, in supply chains and business relationships.

Observers say that modern slavery is a complex and pervasive issue that requires sustained efforts from governments, civil society and individuals. By understanding the causes, consequences and efforts to combat modern slavery, global community can work towards a world where all individuals are treated with dignity and respect, according to the ILO.

December 2 is observed as International Day for the Abolition of Slavery, by the United Nations General Assembly, since 1986.
