Healthy Working Environment as a Catalist to Sound Mental Health
On the occasion of World Mental Health Day(October 10), World Health Organisation(WHO) says safe, healthy working environment can act as a protective factor for mental health.
Unhealthy workplace conditions, including stigma, discrimination, and exposure to risks like harassment, can pose significant risks, affecting mental health, the overall quality of life and consequently, participation or productivity at work.
WHO says with 60 per cent of the global population is at work, urgent action is needed to ensure that work poses no risks to mental health. The WHO notes that depression and anxiety costs the global economy an estimated $1 trillion per year.
The global body also recommends that people take steps to support their own mental health, such as learning stress management techniques and reaching out for support when needed.
The World Federation of Mental Health(WFMH) 2024 Global Campaign themed "Mental Health at Work" raise awareness about mental well-being, make entail health a universal human right and recognize World Mental Health Day.
The WFMH chose the theme "It is time to Prioritize Mental Health in the Work Place" after a global vote involving WFMH members, stakeholders, and supporters. The campaign is dedicated to advocating for mental health within the workplace.
Work is an environment that influenced our mental health. Under good and safe conditions, work can provide purpose, connection and stability, playing a vital role in protecting our mental health, WHO says.
WFMH notes that for too many people, work falls far short of its potential, failing to enhance workers' lives and detracting from sound mental health and well-being in ways that result in excessive distress and mental ill health.
The day serves as a platform to encourage open conversations about mental health and promote initiatives for mental-well-being.
Each year, a theme is chosen to reflect particular aspect of mental health, from increasing awareness of mental health conditions to highlight the importance of access to mental Healthcare.
