16TH WORLD STROKE CONGRESS
"Every second 100 billion neurons in our brains are firing 5 - 50 messages, each one a vital spark of connection that ignites our unique identity, and writes the storeyof our life. But when stroke strikes, that storey is changed forever, " says World Stroke Organisation(WSO).
The World Stroke Day(October 29) campaign seeks to channel the emotional power of sports to drive stroke awareness and motivate us to take action every day to reduce Stroke risk.
According to a Policy Paper published by the WSO, stroke is a leading cause of disability and death world-wide, affecting an estimated 12 million people globally, every year, including an increasing number of young people.
"One in four of us will have a stroke in our lifetime. Knowing more about prevention and symptoms of stroke could save millions of lives," says WSO.
The direct and indirect costs of strokes worldwide are conservatively estimated to be around USD 900 billion annually and are expected to almost double over the next 25 years according to WSO.
A press release issued by the WSO quoted Prof. Sheila Matins of the world body as saying:"The impact of thrombolysis and thrombectomy on stroke patient out comes has been established for more than a decade. More recent research has demonstrated the cost effectiveness of these treatments in low-income, middle-income and high-income countries. Investing in acute stroke care provides governments with unmissable opportunity to reduce the burden of stroke treatment."
According to the WSO Annual Report, the escalating burden of mortality and disability driven by stroke is an urgent global concern. With 87 per cent of stroke burden predicted to occur in LMICs by 2050 and the attendant break on global development, action on stroke across the continuum of care is a priority that no government can choose to ignore.
The first Global Stroke Alliance meeting in the ASEAN region took place in New Delhi, last year. Attended by 173 participants from 9 Southeast Asian countries, along with 29 top health officials from across the region. The meeting witnessed the launch of the Global Declaration on Stroke.
The four-day 16th World Stroke Congress, scheduled to commence in Abu Dhabi, UAE, on October 23, 2024, will discuss the latest science, clinical trails, break-through and guidelines for stroke prevention.
