Why workers walked out of Boeing plant in U S A?

Around 33,000 Boeing workers in the United States walked out of the plant due to a dispute over a contract offer negotiated by their union, the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, according to the New York Times. The report said they were demanding 25% wage increase over three years, restoration of traditional pensions eliminated a decade ago, and more contributions to their retirement account.

The report said the strike halted production of Boeing's best-selling airplanes, including the 737 Max, 777, and 767 cargo planes at factories in Washington, Oregon and  California.

The workers have legitimate  concerns about their compensation, considering they have gone 10 years without significant raises, labour analysts said. With inflation and rising costs of living, they are seeking to make up for lost time, according to independent analysts.

Negotiations between Boeing and the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers(IAM) have resumed, but the is holding out for better pay and pensions. With the strike costing Boeing an estimated $50 million per day, the pressure is on to resolve the dispute quickly, according to some reports.

The labour action is a significant development in the aerospace industry, and it's outcome will likely have far-reaching consequences for Boeing, it's workers, and the broader economy, experts say.

Boeing is one of the largest global aerospace manufacturers and the fourth-largest defence contractor in the world. The company has also faced  challenges related to safety defects and airplane crashes, including the 737 MAX crashes and groundings.

Will the Company cave in to the union's demands or find a way to mitigate the losses? Only time will tell.

The Boeing Company has a significant presence in India, with a long history of partnership with the country's aerospace sector spanning nearly eight decades. The Company also collaborates with Indian institutions on research and development initiatives. The company's annual sourcing from India exceeds $ 1 billion.
